About the Position: Serves as an expert Historian in the Center of Military History (CMH) planning and conducting research and writing projects, as assigned. May be selected at any grade level with non-competitive promotion potential to target grade. Non-competitive promotion potential to the target grade is based on time-in-grade requirements and demonstrated ability to perform the higher graded duties.

Duties

Selects and organizes material to provide a complete picture, stressing events of greatest significance and clearly laying out relations between them. Recommends revisions to improve work of others, including colleagues, more junior historians, and research assistants with a view towards scholarly content, writing style, and conformance with academic guidelines and standards. Uses sound judgment and historical principles to analyze and evaluate available secondary sources. Refines and revises to ensure a publishable account that conforms to the highest professional standards Submits final draft via Division Chief and HD Director to Chief Historian for review by a panel of external historians to ensure highest standards are met. Provides mentoring and professional growth and development guidance to research assistants on the historical profession within the government.

Requirements

• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
• This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to sign DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
• You may be expected to travel up to 10% for this position.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-9). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as History. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
