About the Position: Serves as Director, Field Programs and Historical Services Directorate, one of the subordinate directorates within the Center of Military History. As a Supervisory Historian, responsible for the writing of the official history of the U.S. Army. Historical products directly support senior Army leadership and selected monographs and history volumes are distributed Army-wide.

Duties

Advise the Chief of Military History and Chief Historian on histories to be written and on historical support requirements for Army decision-makers. Develop strategies and priorities for the preparation of the Army's official written history. Approve major projects through respective division chiefs, providing overall direction and guidance to ensure completion of the effort. Ensures that Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Programs for minority group members, women, and handicapped individuals are implemented and operational. Directs Field and Military Programs Division personnel to exercise proponency of military programs and historical collection operations.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A one-year supervisory probation is required.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

Basic Requirement for Supervisory Historian: Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in History; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history. OR Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in History, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes developing products and or proposals that link Army history with military trends; assigning projects through respective echelons of management; planning written history products to include production and drafting; and developing strategies for the preparation of the Army's official written history. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-14). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
