This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Exhibits and Visitor Services Division. The incumbent is a visitor services staff member who often acts in an independent role and is responsible for providing on-site visitors with information and answers to questions using an in-depth knowledge of Museum resources and history of the National Archives.
Duties
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-06. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As a Visitor Services Assistant, you will:
Serve as primary point of contact and greeter for entering museum visitors. Make on the spot decisions and judgments and contact the Visitor Services Manager for all issues that need further deliberation.
Receive and respond to ticket and tour reservation requests and input requests into a ticket reservation software, to include resolving conventional ticketing problems and operating other office equipment to serve the public, input data and otherwise provide customer service.
Provide and facilitate tours of the museum and gallery exhibits, as needed.
Perform opening and closing duties independently: prepare the Museum and public areas for opening, turn exhibits on at opening and off at closing, check spaces for cleanliness, place signage in correct locations, issue entrance receipts and tickets in accordance with established guidelines, assist security in sweeping the Museum at the end of the day for closing.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
For the GS-06, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Greeting visitors or customers in a professional setting, such as; an office, information desk, admissions desk, theater, or lobby; AND
Using Point of Sale (POS) systems to process transactions for visitors or customers (examples; cash register, kiosk, card reader).
For the GS-05, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes performing in a technical, clerical, or support role for a business or organization.Examples of such experience could include:
Utilizing Point of Sale (POS) systems to process transactions for visitors or customers; OR
Greeting clients and responding to inquiries in person, via email, or on the telephone, or utilizing computer systems and tools to prepare and update documents and reports.
OR
EDUCATION: You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4 years above high school.
OR
COMBINATION: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Details on combining education and experience are provided in the online questionnaire.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-06, you must have been at the GS-05level for 52 weeks.
Advancement to positions up to GS-5: Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-05 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment.
