This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform performing a variety of complex and recurring duties in support of wildlife habitat on the unit.

Duties

The work performed is passive, remote-sensing/monitoring with little or no animal handling. Work involves hiking through the woods and deploying and retrieving cameras and audio recorders, with very limited opportunity to actually observe or handle animals. The incumbent performs any of the assignments listed below related to all types of wildlife, including small mammals, birds, carnivores, megafauna, fish, amphibians, reptiles, etc. Plans and conducts a variety of field studies of sensitive wildlife species to determine numbers, environmental conditions, and the condition of the species and its habitat, and factors affecting the health and welfare of the species and its habitat. Data elements collected include, but are not limited to, such things as habitat conditions, age of habitat, location of species, and the condition of the species being studied. Evaluates data and makes recommendations for improvement of habitat or species. Data is collected in field locations, away from the unit. May participate in studies on specific wildlife species, e.g., conducts surveys in order to determine occupancy, nesting, and reproductive statuses. Fieldwork includes deploying and retrieving camera traps and audio recorders in forested environments. Develops work plans to collect required data, determines recording requirements, and factors to use for complete habitat and species condition analyses. Participates with biologists or resource specialists in planning work and contributes productive ideas on uses of materials and methods. Improves, adapts, and develops techniques, procedures, and equipment based on detailed practical knowledge and broad experience. Changes study procedures and data collection in accordance with conditions found in order to provide clear, concise recommendations, which will improve habitat and condition of the species. Provides detailed reports on work methods, data collected and project evaluation. Determines need and recommends equipment requirements for project at hand and assures equipment is operational and available when needed. Uses personal computer systems and associated software for recording, storing, and analyzing data. May train lower-level employees on designated projects.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. GS-07: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6); OR one full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics); OR combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Examples of specialized experience include: Inspecting wildlife habitat and/or nesting sites and collecting field data on wildlife habitat and vegetation, species condition, location, and status for the preparation of maps and habitat management and improvement plans. Compiling and summarizing biological data obtained from aerial and ground surveys to determine vegetation type, wildlife and livestock use, and to identify and evaluate habitat management. Selective Placement Factors May train lower level employees on designated projects. Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods necessary to obtain, use, and interpret date from remote sensing sources, including aircrafts and satellites. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
