This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: This position is located with the Directorate of Public Works, Fort Campbell, KY.
Duties
Inspect a variety of thermostats, switches, flame safeguard controls, linkages, electrical and electronic safety devices.
Perform maintenance on a variety of oil fired and gas fired furnaces.
Inspect a variety of thermostats, switches, flame safeguard controls, linkages, electrical and electronic safety devices.
Repair gas mains to include installation of new piping.
Adjust heating plants for maximum efficiency, using test equipment such as CO2 tester, Testo Digital Combustion analyzer, monometer, and Honeywell systems tester.
Remove, clean, adjust and replace nozzles, electrodes, strainers, filters, orifices, thermocouples and hot surface igniter unit.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. The ability to perform common duties to include: troubleshooting and repairing heating units and systems in buildings. Performing maintenance on a variety of oil fired and gas fired furnaces - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Pipefitting. Work is performed from ladders, scaffolds, and pits, and in other places which are hard to reach. The work requires standing, stooping, bending, reaching and working in tiring positions. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally heavier items. Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic. The work requires standing, stooping, bending, stretching and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Works from ladders, scaffolding and platforms when working on parts of systems that are in hard-to-reach places. Hoists, holders and pulleys are used when removing or replacing large units. Frequently lifts and carries parts and equipment that weigh up to 44 pounds. Systems Repair. Handles and carries tools and equipment that seldom weigh over 44 pounds. The work is normally performed at sites where most of the equipment can be reached from ground or floor level or from ladders. Is frequently required to stoop, bend, kneel, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Motor Vehicle Operation. Light physical effort is used in operating hand and foot controls.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Pipefitting. Works inside and outside, and work is dirty, dusty and greasy. Performs work in areas where bad smells are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. Is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, strains, burns from steam and infections. Is occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Is exposed to asbestos dust when repairing or replacing steam lines. Masks and protective clothing are worn to reduce the risk of Illness. Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic. Works inside in rooms with concrete floors and works outside on top of buildings, in hot or drafty attic spaces and in cramped areas with low overheads. Is exposed to gas, smoke, and burns from scalding water and contact with heated parts of system. Subject to injuries from falls and use of tools. Protective devices such as goggles, respirators, face masks, aprons, hard hats and gloves are provided to minimize these conditions. Work involves exposure to noise levels above 85dB(A) but below 110dB(A), which are reduced by the use of hearing protective devices. Systems Repair. Works primarily outdoors, regularly subject to dirt, dust, fumes, and variations of weather. Is exposed to inhalation of gas fumes, although respiratory protectors are provided which are uncomfortable. There is some exposure to injury from burns due to the presence of residual gas and fumes. Work involves exposure to noise levels above 85dB(A) but below 110dB(A), which are reduced by use of hearing protective devices. Motor Vehicle Operation. Operates vehicle in all kinds of weather. Is exposed to driving hazards and injuries when operating a motor vehicle. Is subject to cuts, bruises and broken bones as a result of driving accidents.
