This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: This position is located with the Directorate of Public Works, Fort Campbell, KY. Fort Campbell lies on the Kentucky/Tennessee border between Hopkinsville, KY & Clarksville, TN about 45 miles NW of Nashville.
Duties
Install and repair low pressure steam and hot water circulating boilers, warm air furnaces, space heaters, infrared heaters, and related equipment, which are gas (natural and liquified) and fuel oil fired.
Assist journeyman in repairing existing high pressure piping systems and equipment.
Maintain water softeners including meters and controls.
Test boiler water samples and steam condensate samples.
Use tools and test equipment such as test lights, voltmeter, millivolt meter, gas pressure testing instruments, gas leak detectors, and micro-amp meter.
Service units by cleaning or replacing filters, strainers, orifices, ignition electrodes, and adjusting dampers.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position is Mission Essential, subject to scheduled/unscheduled overtime and 24-hour emergency call back.
- This position requires a pre-employment physical.
- Operates 1/2 to 3/4 ton truck to and from work site, requiring possession of a valid operator's license.
- This position requires ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Position requires valid Driver License.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) MAINTENANCE WORKER ~ without more than normal supervision. The ability to perform common duties to include: Assisting with the installation, maintenance and repair of low pressure steam and hot water circulating boilers; Ability to assist with observing operating systems to identify malfunctions and the knowledge of maintaining water softeners. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: The work requires standing, stooping, bending, stretching and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Works from ladders, scaffolding and platforms when working on parts of systems that are in hard-to-reach places. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are used when removing or replacing large units. Frequently lifts and carries parts and equipment that weight up to 50 pounds. Pipefitting. Work is performed from ladders, scaffolds, and pits, and in other places which are hard to reach. The work requires standing, stooping, bending, reaching, and working in tiring positions. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally heavier items. Motor Vehicle Operation. Light physical effort is used in operating hand and foot controls.
Working Conditions: Works inside in rooms with concrete floors and works outside on top of buildings, in hot or drafty attic spaces and in cramped areas with low overheads. Is exposed to gas, smoke, and burns from scalding water and contact with'-heated parts of system. subject to injuries from falls and use of tools. Protective devices such as goggles, respirators, face masks, aprons, hard hats and gloves are provided to minimize these conditions. Work involves exposure to noise levels above 85 dB(A) but below 110 dB(A), which are reduced by the use of hearing protective devices. Pipefitting. Works inside and outside, and work is dirty, dusty and greasy. Performs work in areas where bad smells are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. Is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, strains, burns from steam and infections. Is occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Is exposed to asbestos dust when repairing or replacing steam lines. Masks and protective clothing are worn to reduce the risk of illness. Motor Vehicle Operation. operates vehicle in all kinds of weather. Is exposed to driving hazards and injuries when operating a motor vehicle. Is subject to cuts, bruises and broken bones as a result of driving accidents.
