About the Position: Repair, maintenance, overhaul, modification, and operational status of flood control structures, mechanical instruments and stationery industrial equipment, gasoline, electric and diesel-powered heavy duty mobile industrial equipment, vehicles, and floating plant.

Duties

Traces and locates defects and determines the nature and extent of repairs to heavy mobile equipment and vehicles. Repairs include overhauling, rebuilding, and major repair of systems such as diesel, gasoline, diesel electric, diesel hydraulic, and other types of internal combustion engines. Repairs to electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic auxiliary systems, components, and controls. Uses specialized testing equipment, hand tools and power equipment such as motor testers, analyzers, pressure gauges, air and hydraulic jacks and press, welding equipment, micrometers and grinding machines. Traces and locates defects and determines the nature and extent of repairs to flood control structures and stationary industrial equipment and machinery. Recognizes abnormal operating characteristics of the equipment and makes necessary adjustments to correct mechanical problems.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • One-year probationary period.
  • Positions subject to drug and alcohol testing: This position meets the criteria for random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Army.
  • Position requires a pre-employment physical exam due to the physical requirements of the position.
  • Must be physically able to do relatively heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.)
  • The possession of, or the ability to obtain a Crane Operator Certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Must possess a state-issued driver’s license to operate a government vehicle.
  • Shift work is required.
  • First Aid Certificate required.
  • The possession of, or the ability to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) Certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Boat Operator’s Permit to operate boats up to 26 feet is a condition of employment.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common maintenance functions of disassembling, repairing, and/or assembling major systems, components, and/or operating mechanisms on heavy mobile equipment. I can perform maintenance such as changing oil, lubricating and repairing tires, and carburetors, fuel pumps and fuel lines. I have a good understanding of mechanical, electrical, and/or hydraulic theory applying to heavy duty vehicles. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.Knowledge of Materials PHYSICAL EFFORT: Must be physically able to do relatively heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.) and pulling; be able to stand or walk for periods of several hours; be unaffected by noise (with hearing protection), extremes in temperature (0?F to 100?+F), moisture, or other windblown material. WORKING CONDITIONS: Must be able to work both inside and outside in all weather conditions encountered at the structure. Must be able to work in a noisy atmosphere (with hearing protection) for long periods of time (8 to 12 hours). Must be able to work around diesel fuel, gasoline, grease, and lubricating oil.
