The Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) San Diego is looking for the best, brightest and most adventurous clinical counselors to join our team as Deployed Resiliency Counselors (DRC). The DRC will serve as a credentialed clinical counselor aboard a Nuclear Powered Aircraft Carrier (CVN) or Large Deck Amphibious Assault Ship/ Landing Helicopter Assault Ship (LHD/LHA). The DRC is assigned to a ship and provides support services to deployed forces both in port or at sea.

Duties

The primary purpose of the position is to provide professional short-term, solution-focused individual and group counseling for commonly occurring life situations and education on resiliency/wellness topics in a shipboard environment, throughout a ship's lifecycle (pier-side, shipyard maintenance, "work-ups" and deployments). The incumbent will also serve as a liaison to the homeport Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC), providing immediate sexual assault response and coordination to allegations of sexual assault. The success of this position is based on the incumbent's ability to successfully embed within the command and operate within a shipboard environment. The DRC actively engages crew members in various resiliency programs in order to ensure highest level of crew readiness for complex missions at sea. The DRC serves as a liaison to the homeport Family Advocacy Program (FAP) and provides safety assessment, safety planning, triage, and treatment for allegations of alleged child or domestic abuse. The DRC assesses and triages clients presenting with a risk of harm to self or others, with appropriate referral to the nearest behavioral health provider. Cases may involve multiple difficult and complex family problems including dual diagnoses, violence and impulsivity, suicidal and homicidal ideations and/or attempts, and a variety of other mental health problems. The DRC provides Sailor Assistance and Intercept for Life (SAIL) case management including: assessment, safety planning, and care coordination for active duty personnel with suicide related behavior. The DRC participates in Command Resiliency Team (CRT) initiatives, aiding and providing insight into active duty wellness programs. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must provide proof of U.S. Citizenship or U.S. National.
  • A valid State driver's license is required to operate motor vehicles.
  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
  • Must meet federal suitability requirements including successful completion of background investigation and obtain/maintain a Secret Security Clearance (T3).
  • A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to meet the pre-employment requirements, including failure to report to any scheduled appointments.
  • Must be current in continuing education credits/units.
  • Applicant must be state licensed for at least two (2) years.
  • May be required to serve in an “on call” duty status outside of normal work hours.
  • Due to the unique nature of the position, selectees will be required to complete a physical examination upon entry to duty, and annually thereafter, and be determined to be physically fit for shipboard duty at all times.
  • During deployment, there will be limitations on privacy and activities due to the shipboard environment.
  • Complete a one-year probationary period.
  • The incumbent will be required to deploy at sea on board US Navy ships. Regions may approve additional compensatory time-off based on a sliding scale depending on length of deployment.
  • At sea, the incumbent shares a stateroom in officer berthing; meals are obtained by joining the Officers' Mess as a paying member, and meals are purchased by monthly billing.

Qualifications

A Master's degree or doctorate in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Counseling or Clinical Psychology or related field from an accredited institution from any US State. Have and maintain a current and valid state clinical license in any US State that permits the incumbent to function as an independent health practitioner and fully meet and maintain the Tier II or Tier III SECNAVINST 1754.8 requirements. Are current in continuing education credits/units to maintain license. Must have a minimum of 18 months of full-time, post-licensure clinical experience. Shall have two years of experience working in the field of child abuse and domestic abuse. Knowledge of military language, customs, and culture to include navigating shipboard dynamics. Independent clinical skills and sound judgment necessary to provide assessment, triage, referral and case management of clients presenting with a risk of harm to themselves or others, domestic violence, and child abuse. Ability to communicate in writing to develop and prepare case management documentation, psycho-social assessments, treatment plans, correspondence, and reports. Ability to intervene in crises, using sound professional judgment, ethical practice, and common sense. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively communicate with military and civilian medical, social services, law enforcement, and legal personnel. Ability to adapt to changing work conditions, frequent interruptions, and pressures of short deadlines. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook). The incumbent may be required to travel, deploy, or provide services at homeport during a variety of crises and disasters, including serving during times of world conflict, natural disasters, accidents, man-made crises, and other situations as an extension of the FFSC mass care and crisis response program. During deployment, there will be limitations on privacy and activities due to the shipboard environment

Education
