This position is located in the Engineering Service at VA Northeast Ohio Health Care System - Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center in Cleveland, OH. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic is responsible for installing, operating, controlling, maintaining, and repairing various Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HAVC/R) systems and supporting equipment.
Duties
The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic performs duties at Journeyman mechanic level. Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Installing/maintaining/repairing/modifying various HVAC/R equipment and DDC controls in the support of medical and research needs
Monitoring, repairing and reporting to multiple services within the medical center while supporting negative air pressure rooms for air-borne illness for infectious patient care
Surveying proposed work to determine resource requirements and preparing cost estimates for in-service work to be performed
Fabricating and installing sheet metal duct-work
Performing preacceptance inspections of all incoming HVAC/R systems and support equipment
Performing electrical troubleshooting and repairing as to relate to air conditioning and support equipment
Using wire schematics when available and/or tracing out correct power and draw his own schematics to place with equipment
Ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations for refrigerants and hazardous materials
Performing recurring maintenance on systems and components
Using drawings and schematics to analyze and isolate system malfunctions
Repairing or replacing faulty components or modifying equipment with substitution components for specific needs
Maintaining tools and equipment and calibrating testing equipment to ensure precise accuracy
Performing other duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 07:00 a.m. to 03:30 p.m.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Incumbent employs a high degree of manual dexterity as some HVAC/R and support equipment are located in relatively inaccessible areas, above ceilings or in crawl spaces. Long periods of standing on ladders or stooping may be necessary. Considerable physical exertion is required when lifting, moving and transporting heavy or awkward equipment. Incumbent must be able to perform for lengthy periods of time in hot, cold or damp areas.
Personnel are exposed to hot and cold temperatures for various periods of time. Fumes from refrigerants and other chemicals are a frequent hazard. Exposure to electrical shock, burns, and possible injuries from ruptured refrigeration gas or liquid lines. Cuts, bruises and scratches frequently incurred on hands while working with tools or sheet metal.
