You will serve as a NUCLEAR MECHANICAL SYSTEMS INSPECTOR (SHIPS) in the Nuclear Inspection Division (Code 139) of PSNS and IMF.
Duties
You will perform mechanical, piping, and structural inspections, in-process, product, pre-test, test inspections, certification and acceptance of completed work reviews on nuclear reactor plant, refueling, and overhaul work.
You will ensure reactor grade cleanliness is maintained in accordance with local directives as required by specification for reactor plant cleanliness.
You will perform weld joint in-process and acceptance inspections for nuclear welding and non-destructive tests.
You will initiate and authorize rejection of workmanship, components, materials, and procedures that do not meet specifications by preparing a nuclear deficiency report.
You will perform surveillance of ongoing or completed work to ensure compliance with all applicable directives.

- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- You will be required to meet the physical and training requirements to become a qualified radiation worker.
- Work may require lifting, and or carrying, generally not in excess of forty-four pounds.
- Work requires the incumbent to possess normal color sensitivity, muscular coordination, visual acuity, and be able to make decisions in unusual situations.
- Work requires the ability to perform inspections in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time in standing, stooping, or crouching positions which could cause muscular fatigue or physical strains.
- Work requires the physical ability to perform duties in areas reached by ascending or descending ladders, staging, stairs and etc.
Qualifications
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
