This is a Research AST, Biological Studies position responsible for coordinating and executing biological science projects for the advancement of space biology and/or human research. The duties include: theoretical and experimental research on the physical and biological processes of living organisms and systems as related to: space biosciences research, aeronautical and space travel, with projects involving spaceflight and/or ground-based research work.
Duties
Uses specialty knowledge in the Biological Scientist field, performs a combination of duties as determined by management and organizational
needs.
Supports projects using model organisms spanning research areas of animal-, molecular-, cellular-, microbial- or systems biology research for
both NASA spaceflight and/or ground-based experiments.
Supports the portfolio of program grants, research-based grants, and other grants for agency programs, including technical monitoring duties.
Conducts biological science studies, experiments, and/or research projects such as: spaceflight and/or ground-based and are focused on
scientific research of importance to the Agency.
Provides technical and scientific coordination, support, and recommendations during project planning, development and implementation phases.
Represents science capabilities for assigned payloads, experiments or ground-based research projects with other groups at Ames Research
Center (ARC), other NASA centers, and at major technical and scientific meetings.
Prepares technical material for publication in professional journals, NASA publications, and creates presentations for technical and scientific
meetings.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.
To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level:
Performing experimental research in microbiology or molecular biology as it relates to space or space analog environments and applying it to methods and/or technology development
Recommending short- and long-range goals of the organization, develops detailed plans for implementation and oversees implementation of the goals
Coordinating research project budgets, schedules, and resource allocations and reporting, to maintain project visibility and provides project status presentations required
Participating in processes integral to project planning, requirements definition, development, implementation, and operations for life/space science experiments or studies

Education
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.
If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.
Degrees in engineering technology are
not considered qualifying for this position.
