Salary: $152,105 (Step 01) to $191,900 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels. A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. *OR* B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. (CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS ON HOW TO COMBINE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE) FOR GS-14: In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level. Examples of GS-13 level work may include: 1) securing funds for, planning, and leading multi-year, interdisciplinary projects that feature the use of enriched metal isotopes to investigate the biological fate and subacute (non-lethal) toxicological effects of trace elements; 2) devising, conducting, analyzing, and interpreting field-based and/or laboratory-based data from ecotoxicological isotopic tracer studies using algae algal and invertebrate species to inform and refine bioaccumulation kinetic models; 3) developing new or significantly modified biological tracing techniques, digestion methods, model species, or biological kinetic models to increase the mechanistic understanding of trace metal bioaccumulation and effects; or 4) maintaining, operating, and training others in the use ofinductively coupled plasma (ICP) mass spectrometers (ICP-MS) or optical emission spectrometers (ICP-OES)and the specialized methods of sample handling and preparation required for biological tracer studies using enriched metal isotopes. For examples 1-4, the work provided wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
