Duties
Evaluates all aspects of assigned safety and occupational health management system and programs within the command and for all servicing commands, and subordinate divisions within the organization.
Collects, maintains and analyzes relevant program data.
Conducts periodic and unscheduled assistance visits, standard army safety and occupational health inspections and other technical safety inspections in shops, warehouses, motor pools, etc.
Prepares written reports of findings, recommendations, posts notices of unsafe or unhealthy working conditions, assigns risk assessment codes, and prepares abatement plans with time frames for elimination of hazards.
Collaborates with preventive medicine personnel to ensure the adequacy of existing safety and health measures and to identify where additional preventive measures need to be taken.
Organize and conducts safety training classes.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the selectee to pass a pre-employment physical.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- Incumbent must complete the CP-12 level 1 skills outlined in the 0018-job series master training plan and be awarded the CP-12 Safety and Occupational Health Professional Certificate within 12 months of hire.
- Army Civilian Training Education and Development System (ACTEDS) requirements apply. All ACTEDS training requirements must be completed IAW the ACTEDS plan.
- Position requires a Secret security clearance.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience applying safety and occupational health principles, practices and procedures in accordance with safety laws and regulations; analyzing safety programs for compliance to reduce hazards to personnel and facilities; reviewing safety inspection report responses for safety compliance; and developing and recommending safety and occupational health policy to higher levels of management. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09)
OR
Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
