Duties

You will serve as a Physical Science Technician in the Radiological Monitoring Division, RADCON Office of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. You will monitor and control several phases of refueling and primary systems components replacement. You will observe nuclear propulsion plant work processes, control radioactive material, and control radiation exposure and radioactive contamination. You will ensure appropriate corrective mitigating action is taken in the event of a radiological control casualty situation. You will determine causes of deficiencies or accidents and recommend ways to prevent them.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

Qualifications

GS-08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: *Experience performing radiological safety monitoring through prevention and control of nuclear incidents to protect shipyard employees. *Experience performing various phases of complicated operations with radioactive systems projects. *Experience ensuring compliance with radiological safety requirements and recommending changes to improve the safety and efficiency of procedures. *Experience applying knowledge of radiological principles, requirements, and procedures, trade work techniques and procedures, and the design and layout of Naval Nuclear Propulsion systems to ensure radiological safety requirements are met. GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: *Experience performing radiological safety monitoring through prevention and control of nuclear incidents to protect shipyard employees. *Experience performing various phases of operations with radioactive systems projects. *Experience ensuring compliance with radiological safety requirements and recommending changes to improve the safety and efficiency of procedures. *Experience assisting with evaluating various incidents and identifying mitigation practices. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position:

GS-8: Successful completion of one and a half years of graduate education leading to a master's degree

GS-7: Successful completion of one full year of graduate level education

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.
