You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN in the RADIOLOGICAL MONITORING DIVISION, RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL OFFICE of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will validate proper performance of technical radiological control work while exercising and applying a broad knowledge of that portion of the Health Physics field relating to radiological monitoring and control. You will serve as a senior radiological control representative on work groups comprised of various levels of employees in accomplishing planning, mock-up training, work practice development and execution of complex repairs. You will provide on the job training and mentoring for junior radiological control technicians to ensure adequate development proficiency. You will be responsible for control of personnel exposure to ionizing radiation, protection against radioactive contamination, and protection of the general public against exposure to ionizing radiation. You will respond to radiological emergencies and abnormal conditions assuring for the identification and proper control of radioactivity associated with the Naval Nuclear propulsion plants.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-10 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying knowledge of theoretical and practical matters related to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program including health physics, applied radiological controls, abnormal situation response, training of junior technicians on technical skills, theories and radiological work practices, etc. Experience providing on-scene radiological control responses for actual or potential radiological emergencies, casualties, training exercises and proficiency drills. Experience applying knowledge of physical science principles, theories, methodologies and techniques of radiological control requirements. Experience applying knowledge of Naval Nuclear work processes, trade operations and regulatory requirements to effectively plan and coordinate the development and implementation of appropriate radiological controls. Experience directing and coordinating subordinate technicians, Ship's Force and other personnel on radiological controls as applied to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
