The National Institute of Health (NIH) Clinical Center (CC) Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM) offers laboratory diagnostic support in the areas of Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology, Phlebotomy, and Sterility Testing. As a recognized expert in microbiology, the incumbent provides clinical testing and research services for DLM, CC and NIH and the work performed by the incumbent advances the knowledge of the microbiology discipline in the field of healthcare.
Duties
As a GS-0403-14 Microbiologist, your duties may include, but are not limited to the following tasks:
Serve as a clinical microbiologist overseeing infectious disease diagnostic testing, regulatory compliance, and laboratory administration.
Serve as a consultant to the infectious disease clinicians for patient care.
Serve as a primary investigator or project member for research projects of broad and complex scope to treat problems that are exceptionally difficult and unyielding to investigation and/or require unconventional or novel approaches or complex research techniques.
Provide specialized medical expertise in applied and/or basic research.
Develop a research program, which will enhance research goals and objectives of the laboratory.
Analyze, evaluate, and interpret scientific and clinical data.
Design, conduct, or direct translational research investigations.
Conduct collaborative research that may include the human subject studies that require the adherence to guidelines regarding the following: data collection, data release policies, design protocols, dissemination of results, informed consent, patient examination, patient safety, protocol adherence monitoring, randomization recruitment, referral for abnormal findings, reporting adverse events.

- Physical Requirements: Regular and recurring physical exertion to include long periods of standing, walking, bending over instrument and microscopes, and lifting light to moderately heavy items such as various supplies.

You qualify at the GS-14 level, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements:
In order to qualify for a Microbiologist, GS-403-14 position, you must meet the following requirements:
A. Have successfully completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that includes at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms and at least 20 semester hours need to be in the physical and mathematical sciences (combination of course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent);
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Serving as a primary investigator or project member for research projects of broad and complex scope to address problems that are exceptionally difficult to resolve as part of critical clinical investigations; managing and/or collaborating on human subjects studies, advising clinicians and physician scientists on the significance of the diagnostic test menu and interpretation of laboratory test results; designing, validating, implementing and overseeing new clinical diagnostic testing services in accordance with regulatory guidelines and standards; participating in clinical investigations and trials for the management of patients; and presenting and publishing scientific studies and research results.

Have certification by the American Board of Medical Microbiology/American Board of Medical Laboratory Immunology
OR
Be elected to a Fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology.
