You will serve as a Microbiologist and senior research assistant in support of the research activities of the laboratory. Stay abreast of pertinent literature, extracts relevant details, and incorporates appropriate concepts and techniques into research activities and experiments. Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of the particular area of research throughout the life of the project, reviewing available literature on new methods and techniques for potential application within the laboratory.

Duties

Serve as senior research assistant in support of the research activities of the laboratory. Independently plan, develop, implement, and manage all assigned experiments and protocols. Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of the particular area of research throughout the life of the project, reviewing available literature on new methods and techniques for potential application within the laboratory. Develop new methods for and collect, analyze, organize and record experimental data appropriate for publication and future reference by others. Maintain complete, detailed records of all experiments performed. Use a variety of statistical methods for analysis of data. Interpret findings, summarize conclusions and prepare data in final form for publication in scientific journals. Manage the day-to-day operation of the laboratory, including coordinating activities of diverse laboratory research projects and personnel, and ensuring availability of equipment and supplies.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Microbiologist, GS-0403-12, position, you must have: A. completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in microbiology; OR B. completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in biology, chemistry, or basic medical science. At least 20 semester hours need to be in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms and at least 20 semester hours need to be in the physical and mathematical sciences (combination of course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent); OR C. a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in microbiology, or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in B above, AND have appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. In addition, to qualify for a Microbiologist position at the GS-0403-12 level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: planning and developing microbiological or biological experiments and protocols; evaluating the progress of microbiological experiments and establishing plans and resources for the completion of the project; preparing data in final form for scientific publication; coordinating the installation, repair, calibration and training for laboratory equipment.
