About the Position: Welder positions with the United States Army Engineer District, Huntington Regional Rivers Repair Fleet, Heavy Capacity Fleet Unit. Louisville, KY

Duties

Perform welder duties using electric, acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding processes. Use templates, jigs, blueprints, and other guides to repair, modify or fabricate metal items for all types of equipment. Make a wide range of welds from simple to precision welding utilizing the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and flux core arc welding (FCAW) processes. Work with light, heavy-gauge, and hardened metals, welding all the various types of weldable items assigned, using flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead positions. Operate and control the various movements of the crane and load to avoid quick drops, jerks or sudden movements which may cause cables to break or loads to fall. Operate forklifts on uneven conditions to unload vehicles and move materials in outside storage yards. Use electric, oxyacetylene, oxyhydrogen gas metal arc, gas tungsten arc, and gas carbon arc welding processes to weld metal parts. Utilize a variety of hand and power tools to position, bend, shape, or modify assemblies or components in a safe and effective manner to accomplish assigned work.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires to obtain and maintain all Corps of Engineers licenses. Which includes, but is not limited to Dump Truck, Truck and Trailer, Crane, Forklift, and Construction Equipment.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical exam, to ensure required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug test screening and random drug and alcohol test screenings thereafter.
  • This position requires to lift objects weighing up to 50 and up to 100 pounds.
  • This position requires a valid State motor vehicles operators' license.
  • This position requires obtain and maintain American Welding Society (AWS) Code D1.1 welder's certificate.
  • The business travel requirement is 75%.

CHRA APPROVED Selective Placement Factors: WG-10 grade level must successfully pass pre-employment weld testing to obtain SMAW 6G (6010 root 7018 fill and cap) weld certification and maintain certification thereafter. WG-08 and WG-10 grade level must successfully pass pre-employment weld testing to obtain 3G/4G FCAW (unlimited thickness) weld certification and maintain certification thereafter. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG-10: Able to perform repair, modify or fabricate all types of metal and alloy parts, working processes include pre-heating, brazing, flame-cutting, heat treating, bead or tack welding, and the use of templates and jigs as needed to bend and cut metal of various shapes, sizes, and thickness; Using blueprints, sketches, work orders, specifications, or other guides to plan, layout, and work orders to complete assignments; Operating a heavy equipment such as overhead cranes, dump truck, aria lifts, and forklifts to assures proper fit of required safety equipment. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG-08: Ability to do the work of a Welder without more than normal supervision. Assisting in welding processes, using templates, jigs, and blueprints. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work involves standing, walking, stooping, climbing and crawling. Work may be performed in an awkward or cramped position. Incumbent frequently handles, lifts, or carries parts or equipment that weighs up to 50pounds. Occasionally may lift and carry items weighing more. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside subject to injury from lifting, operating machines and using miscellaneous tools. Is exposed to abnormal noise; inclement weather; burns from electric arc, gas torches and molten metal; changing temperatures; and fumes. Danger to the eyes is present from metal chips, electric arc, rust and dust. Is also subject to danger of explosive gases.
