Duties
Researches patient records to ensure the insurance billing is correct.
Posts payments received from the insurance companies to appropriate computerized ledgers and subsidiary ledgers.
Explains Third-Party Collection (TPC) program to patients and their insurance companies.
Calls numerous insurance companies to verify insurance coverage, amount of coverage, existing rules and regulations pertaining to the patient's policy.
Maintains suspense records on all claims and correspondence.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- This is a DOD Financial Management position.
- The incumbent must complete training and meet position requirements for certification at Level1 within 2 years of appointment. Failure to obtain and maintain this certification within the required time may subject the incumbent to adverse action.
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) performing medical billing activities such as collecting claims for medical care; 2) entering and retrieving data in an automated system; 3) and conducting pre-admission processing of all beneficiaries scheduled for treatment. The definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position (GS-05) in the federal service.
This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
