This is a general Maintenance Mechanic (Structures) position, in the Maintenance Section of Engineering Service at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS), Little Rock Arkansas.
Duties
Major Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Experience operating and using power and hand tools and other woodworking equipment such as portable drills, clippers, joiners, shavers, tenenors, sanders, routers, power actuated nailers, combustions type saws, screw fasteners, drill press, and table saws.
Experience framing (layout)walls, rough openings for doors and windows, install block and brick, patch and paint.
Experience measuring for layouts such as those required to construct footings for structural foundations and construct concrete forms and related structures with little or no supervision.
Experience determining the proper grade, size, and type of lumber or wood substitute material required for the job.
Experience interpreting blueprints, sketches, manufacturers' specifications and technical manuals and be knowledgeable in shop math, standard formulas and standard shop practices.
Interprets verbal as well as written instructions.
Experience on architectural drawings and blueprints. Ability to interpret specifications, footnotes, and dimensions on drawings.
Requests PM numbers, following procedures established by Engineering Service, for newly installed equipment, where maintenance is the responsibility of the incumbent, including equipment installed by contract.
Experience operating both hand and power tools within the carpentry, mason and painting career fields.
Experience utilizing tools associated with the trade such as trowels, floats, joint runner, gauge lines, spirit lines, plumb bobs, air hammers, hand hammers, chisels, etc.
Work Schedule: 1 position Monday to Friday 7:30am- 4:00pm. 2 positions Monday to Thursday 1:00pm - 11:30 pm(Subject to change based on the needs of the Agency).

Physical Requirements: Incumbent makes repairs from ladders, scaffolding and platforms to reach equipment in out-of-the way places. A great amount of physical effort is required in the application of plaster on ceilings and walls which requires the use of tools overhead and above shoulder height. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Occasionally lifts and carries items over 90 pounds. When working on ladders and scaffolds, must be able to climb and carry tools and materials.
Working Conditions: Work is inside and outside in hot, humid or cold environments. It is usually dusty, dirty and greasy. Must be able to work at heights as job dictates or work under buildings in close quarters to accomplish goals of the Building Structures Unit (BSU). Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of sometimes severe strains, cuts, burns, noise, eye damage, bruises and infection and is, therefore, required to use appropriate procedures and personal protective equipment. Also exposed to other hazards such as eye injuries while chipping plaster and concrete and frequently exposed to dust and dirt while mixing concrete. There is continuous exposure to paint splatter and inhalation of fumes from chemicals in paint. Duties are performed as assigned to both divisions of the medical center.
