You will serve as an INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY, HEALTH, AND ENVIRONMENT DEPARTMENT of PEARL HARBOR NSY AND IMF. The salary for the GS-07: $56,706 to $72,041 The salary for the GS-09: $69,361 to $88,116 A post allowance amount, (otherwise known as: COLA), of 8.90% will be added to the stated salary. Post allowance is subject to change at any time. For additional information, please refer to the Joint Travel Regulations (JTR), Chapter 5 Part B.

Duties

You will prepare and issue procedures, instructions and other guidance concerning industrial health programs and related stressors under the review of a more senior Industrial Hygienist. You will review and observe work process, procedures, and facility plans to ensure adequate industrial health controls have been considered and incorporated. You will provide periodic written assessments of industrial health programs which identify problem trends and areas for improvement within the Shipyard. You will plan, direct or conduct detailed surveys and investigations related to the recognition, evaluation and control of industrial health hazards for specific programs, in accordance with past precedence. You will support educational programs designed to inform management, supervisors and employees of potential hazardous exposures, applicable directives, latest control techniques and general industrial health matters. You will conduct inspections of worksites to observe work practices and environmental conditions for hazards to health and safety, and to detect violations of published health standards. You will conduct walk-through of worksite, noting which operations could constitute potential health problems. You will conduct and/or directs sampling. You will investigate occupational illnesses or employee complaints of alleged unhealthful working conditions. You will evaluate adequacy of controls for health hazards in initial and final plans and specifications for facility construction, alteration and repair, as well as modification or relocation of processes.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.

Qualifications

GS-09 Specialized Experience In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST performing surveys, sampling, and writing technical reports to evaluate health hazards in industrial shops or similar areas for the reassurance to provide employees with a more healthful working environment. GS-07 Specialized Experience In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST calibrating equipment, taking samples, and preparing reports to assist with the evaluation of health hazards in industrial shops or similar areas for the reassurance to provide workers with a more healthful working environment. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:

A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science

OR

A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene

OR

Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).

Note: Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
