Duties

This is a full-time position with the Marshal's Office - Police Department at the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington, D.C. This is a civilian position within the police department. This position is located in the Supreme Court of the United States, Police Force, Background Investigations Unit. Conduct thorough background investigations that follow department policies, laws and procedural requirements to determine suitability for employment for federal law enforcement officers, civilians and contractors. Contact and conduct investigative interviews of applicants, applicant personal references and applicant employment references; develops and pursues lines of inquiry. Gather, verify, and analyze personal, professional, credit/financial, and educational documents; contacts other agencies, governments, and professional organizations to obtain and verify information. Conduct discrepancy interviews to assess the truthfulness of the information provided. Prepares letters, reports and written summary of findings; analyzes investigation results and draws logical and objective conclusions; confers with hiring managers; makes recommendations regarding suitability for employment. Coordinate medical and psychological testing and reviews reports to determine suitability. Schedules and administers the Physical Abilities Test for police applicants. Communicate with managers, supervisors, or hiring decision-makers to discuss the information obtained. Respond to requests for information and assist outside agencies when appropriate. May be required to travel to interview sources and verify information. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Effectively evaluate suitability of an applicant and prepare sound recommendations based on research and analysis; demonstrate sensitivity of diverse cultures and individuals; work within stringent deadlines; organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks to complete work; work independently; read, comprehend and interpret complex written materials; perform detailed work with accuracy; exercise good judgment in safeguarding confidential and sensitive information; exercise diplomacy when dealing with people in sensitive situations; operate computers and related software; establish and maintain effective working relationships with applicants, agencies, employees, and the general public; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Qualifications

Two or more years of investigative experience is required, preferably in a law enforcement setting. Prior experience conducting investigations for employment suitability or security clearances at a federal, state, or local level is preferred. Experience conducting in-person, virtual and telephonic investigations; coordinating with local/state/federal law enforcement agencies; ability to gather, analyze and present facts orally and in writing, preferably in a law enforcement setting. Experience with Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and experience with variety of research and reporting databases. Active Top Secret security clearance preferred. Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance with SCI and RD access within 90 days of hire required.

Education

A high school diploma is the minimum educational requirement; Bachelor's Degree is preferred. There is no substitute of education for experience.
