Duties

Serves as a firefighter who work to control and extinguish fires, rescue persons endangered by fire, and reduce or eliminate potential fire hazards. Responds to alarms and combats fire in an industrial setting requiring the full performance of a firefighting tasks involving structures, equipment, and facilities. Continues the patient care initiated as the first responder to provide the first level of field care based on assessment findings; treats conditions based on the specific symptoms observed or described by the patient. Performs initial and on-going focused patient assessment and determines priority of patient care based on assessment findings physical examination.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.

  • This position requires the employee to work 72 hours per week/144 biweekly hours and may be subject to recall after normal tour of duty in cases of emergencies.
  • This position requires participation in the DoD Firefighter Physical Fitness Program.
  • This position requires certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation with Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training.
  • Within 60 days of appointment, the incumbent must obtain and maintain Telecommunicator I. Within 120 days of appointment, the incumbent must obtain and maintain Telecommunicator II.
  • This position requires the employee to wear uniform.
  • Within twelve (12) months of appointment, the incumbent must obtain and maintain the following DoD Firefighter certification levels: Airport Firefighter Driver/Operator ARFF Hazardous Materials Technician.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes work that involves:1) experience using firefighting and fire prevention techniques and methods such as performing search and rescue, operating hose lines and performing ventilation; 2) experience with the use of firefighting equipment to include driving and operating a full range of emergency services apparatus such as pumpers and aerial trucks; and 3) experience performing hazard assessment and/or conducting fire prevention inspections. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Selective Placement Factors: This position requires you to possess and maintain all of the following Department of Defense, International Fire Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) equivalent certifications: (Please note: All certifications must be uploaded at time of application): -Firefighter I - Firefighter II -Hazardous Materials Awareness and Hazardous Materials Operations -Driver Operator Pumper -EMT - Basic or higher level issued by the State of Virginia or National Registry.
