Duties
Serves as the Assistant Chief, responsible for oversight and direction of the day-to-day operations of multiple fire stations.
Directs the operation of firefighting vehicles such as pumpers, ladders, tankers, utility and rescue trucks.
Supervises the performance of structural and crash firefighting duties for a variety of facilities and aircraft located at Fort McNair, Pentagon, Fort Myer and Arlington National Cemetery.
Performs rescue of personnel and a variety of first aid measures to alleviate further injury and prepare the victim(s) for transport to a medical treatment facility.
Supervises the maintenance of firefighting equipment and fire station facility.
Complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment.
Requirements
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
- As a "Key" position, the incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure mission accomplishment of sustaining base operations during mobilization.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 24-hour rotating shifts with a 72 hour per week (144 hours per pay period).
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
- This position requires the incumbent to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
- This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
- This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
- This position requires that you must possess and maintain a Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider (CPR) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- This position requires that you possess a current State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) certification.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.

DOD FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES MINIMUM QUALIFICATION AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To occupy this position, at the time of appointment the incumbent must possess and then continue to maintain the following DoD Firefighter certification levels:
Fire Officer III
Fire Instructor II
Fire Inspector II
HAZMAT Incident Commander
Airport Firefighter
HAZMAT Technician
Driver/Operator Pumper
Driver/Operator ARFF
National Incident Management System certification: IS-100, IS-200, IS-700 and IS-800
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 grade level in the Federal service which includes development and implementation of an effective fire protection and prevention program, comprehensive knowledge of all phases of structural firefighting. Directing a firefighting crew engaged in fire protection and prevention inspections, operations, hazardous material containment and control and fire prevention inspections. Ensure maintenance of equipment and facilities.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-10).
