THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 5 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a TITLE 5 FIRE PROTECTION INSPECTOR (MI 127th CES), Position Description Number NGT6304000 and is part of the MI 127 Wing, National Guard.

Duties

***THIS IS A TITLE 5 EXCEPTED NATIONAL GUARD POSITION*** The primary purpose of this position is: To perform fire prevention and inspection duties designed to detect and reduce or eliminate fire hazards in a high fire expectancy area. Develops and conducts extensive fire protection and prevention education and training programs. 1. Conducts an information program to elicit support and involvement in fire prevention, detection, and suppression. Secures client interest through emphasis of pertinent fire prevention topics and developing messages from actual fire incidents. 2. Performs regular and periodic fire protection inspections for all areas of the installation where the potential severity and expectancy for fire is high and involves hazards that are difficult to recognize and, once identified, require advanced or innovative methods to reduce or eliminate them. Adapts accepted techniques for application to potential hazards in highly specialized and technical operations. 3. Inspects, tests, and corrects deficiencies on a variety of fire protection systems, many of which are complex or designed for a specific operation or hazardous condition, (e.g., carbon dioxide cascade systems, halon total flood systems, heat rise detection systems, and interlock systems).Maintains close checks on new systems being installed to ensure installation and performance are in accordance with established standards. 4. Reviews engineering plans and specifications for new construction, alteration, and extension of existing structures. Recommends changes and additions to ensure plans include appropriate fire protection requirements as called for in agency regulations, National Fire Protection Association(NFPA) building codes, and other applicable guidelines. 5. Develops and maintains a variety of documentation such as fire prevention inspection schedules and facilities jackets on assigned facilities. Jackets include information on hazards, pre-fire plans, risk assessment codes (RAC), and regularly scheduled and special inspections conducted. 6. Complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment. Ensures federal, state, and local protection/prevention ordinances and building codes concerning health, safety, and the environment are strictly adhered to.

Requirements

  • The employee may be required to travel in military and/or commercial aircraft/vehicle to perform temporary duty assignments.
  • Must have a valid civilian driver’s license.
  • Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program.
  • Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management.
  • The employee may be required to work rotating shifts which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or one 24-hour shift per week (if required to perform the qualifications of the position changes).
  • May be subject to recall. May be required to participate in on-scene firefighting duties during emergencies, low-manning periods, or during stand-by hours while on 24-hour shift.
  • The employee is subject to random drug testing. Pre-employment drug testing and participation in random drug testing is a condition of employment.
  • Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.
  • May be required to work the Fire Alarm and Communications Center (FACC).
  • May be required to participate on Hazardous Materials Teams (HAZMAT).
  • This position is designated as Essential Personnel and may be subject to duty in preparation for, or in response to, a state emergency or disaster declaration.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Months Required: 18 Experience that demonstrated the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position. Such duties may include (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention (7) Firefighting and fire prevention theory and techniques; (8) Fixed and mobile firefighting equipment operation. (9) Planning, directing, or carrying out fire protection and prevention programs and operations and/or (10) Performing emergency medical services. Maximum Entry Age: The maximum entry age for DoD firefighters is 37. An individual not appointed by the last day of the month in which the individual becomes age 37 will not be originally appointed or assigned to these positions. For exceptions to the maximum entry age, see DoD Instruction 1400.25, Volume 336, January 22, 2015, Incorporating Change 1, December 1, 2017, Enclosure 3, Section 3. Performance Test: Agencies may require candidates to demonstrate satisfactory performance of the minimum physical abilities necessary to perform safely and efficiently the essential tasks of a particular position. The abilities may be demonstrated through prior satisfactory performance in the same or a similar position, or agencies may choose to use a task demonstration. Medical Requirements: Employees in positions involving firefighting duties or other duties involving arduous physical exertion may be subject to periodic (e.g., annual) medical examinations following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position. (See 5 CFR 339.)

Education

You must meet the following Education requirement to qualify for this position:

Employee is required to be certified by the DoD Firefighter Certification Program as Fire Inspector II (includes Fire Inspector I), Fire Instructor I, and Hazmat Awareness.
NOTE: The following certifications are also required if a Fire Protection Inspector is utilized to fill in or support a firefighting operations position- Hazmat Operations, Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I, II)
