Duties

Provide emergency services to the public by answering emergency 911 calls and responding with appropriate personnel and equipment. Question caller to determine the problem and the nature of the call. Retrieve statistical information from computerized databases. Monitor computerized fire alarm system and Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS). Maintain an accurate status of all emergency response equipment and personnel to ensure prompt and accurate response. Operate Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system, radios, and station alerting systems. Provide initial Incident Command support until responding emergency units arrive on scene. Provide emergency medical dispatching assistance to callers with medical emergencies.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Incumbent must obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Within 16 weeks from the date of employment, the incumbent will be required to demonstrate proficiency on the use of E911, CAD, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and station alerting software and equipment.
  • Position is subject to shift work where the incumbent is required to work an alternate, rotating work schedule, which requires an uncommon tour of duty (including nights, weekends and holidays).
  • Incumbent is required to work (mission essential) regardless of weather conditions or base closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.
  • Incumbent may be required to wear a uniform.
  • Incumbent must be a qualified typist. (40 wpm).
  • Incumbent must pass a pre-employment; fingerprint based criminal history investigation for any location that accesses Criminal Justice Information Systems.
  • The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain certification in: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Incumbent must complete the Department of Defense Telecommunicator I and II or equivalent based on the program standards at the location assigned.
  • Incumbent must complete State National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification based on assigned location.
  • Incumbent must complete the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS 100,300, 700, 800, and 907 courses.
  • The incumbent is responsible for attaining continuing dispatch education (CDE) requirements through in-service training that is offered locally and pass in accordance with predetermined course requirements.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. GS-05 - Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) Operating computer systems to accomplish assigned duties; 2) Communicating with callers to determine nature of calls; and 3) Utilizing communication equipment to apply appropriate responses to calls. OR Education: Successfully completed four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university, with studies in a field related to this position, such as Emergency Management or Crisis & Disaster Management. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of education and experience: Specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have some education above the high school level but less than required in B. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.). (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) GS-06 - Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) Processing phones calls such as: non-emergency and emergency calls; 2) Operating dispatching equipment while communicating with callers, and 3) Monitoring alarms to initiate appropriate responses. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. GS-07 - Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal Service which includes: 1) Answering emergency and/or non-emergency calls for police, fire, or ambulance assistance; 2) Dispatching emergency personnel as needed in accordance with priority level procedures; and 3) Operating communications software to perform dispatching duties such as: log calls, prepare reports of activities, and assist with medical dispatching until appropriate emergency units arrive. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. In addition to the requirement above, this position requires a typing proficiency of at least 40 words per minute (WPM) based on a 5 minute sample with 3 or fewer errors.
