This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Domestic Defense Industrial Base (DIB) and Major Range and Test Facilities Base (MRTFB) to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Duties
Install and repair large climate-controlled systems and direct digital control systems which provide a variety of air conditioning functions.
Periodic checks on the varied and complex systems located throughout the Depot to ensure air conditioning functions are providing required climatic conditions.
Install and repair large and complex heating units and systems composed of high-pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment which produce steam and hot water for distribution.
Test and make complete repairs on complex equipment such as compressors, refrigerant controls, motor controls, full/semi-automatic defrosting controls, and overload/overheating controls.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation NACI T1.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- 25% business travel.
- Position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- Obtain and maintain a Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license.
- Obtain and maintain a Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification.
- Obtain and maintain an Ariel Platform Certification.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR
This position requires a Universal Chloro-Floro-Carbon - Hydro-Chloro-Floro-Carbon (CFC-HCFC) license issued by a certified agency to test and verify knowledge of refrigerants and the harm they can impose on the environment.
To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. 1) Installing large climate controlled systems which provide a variety of air conditioning functions; 2)Testing complex equipment compressors, refrigerant controls, motor controls, full/semi-automatic defrosting controls, and overload/overheating controls; and 3)Repairing pumps, compressors, chillers, receivers, and/or evaporators, by installing and fitting connecting rods, crank shafts, piston rings, and other components. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT
Incumbent carries and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to fifty pounds. Works from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Required to stand, stoop, stretch, bend, climb, and kneel for prolonged periods while making repairs in hard-to-reach places.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed inside as well as outdoors in different types of weather. Incumbent is subject to frequent temperature changes and is exposed to gas and smoke, dust, scalding water, fumes, cuts, burns, and electrical shock. Protective devices are provided as required.
