You will serve as an INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) of NMRTC JACKSONVILLE FL.

Duties

You will perform duties encompassing all phases of the industrial hygiene program as specified by the Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Navy (DON) and Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) and the U.S. Code of Federal regulations. You will lead a team in performing industrial hygiene inspections, surveys and evaluations. You will maintain, calibrate, and select appropriate equipment and media and conducts or oversees sampling. You will recommend medical surveillance for employees who are potentially over exposed to hazardous materials, noise, and physical hazards. You will provide consultation and advice to activities on occupational health problems and concerns, when requested. You will advise management staff and safety office staff on respiratory protection, storage and handling of chemicals, and upon request, performs unscheduled evaluations and accompanies special inspection teams. You will utilize professional industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices applicable with the identification, evaluation, and control of occupational health hazards found in a variety of industrial settings. You will recognize potential health hazards associated with a particular work environment and to select appropriate sampling techniques for measuring the extent of exposure.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience investigating and analyzing operations and facilities to identify occupational health hazards and provide corrective actions and preventive measures for deficiencies in an industrial setting. Experience advising on comprehensive industrial hygiene support to recognize, evaluate, and control occupational health hazards to quantify exposures and make recommendations for protective measures. Experience leading subordinates in inspecting and surveying potential work-related health problems and evaluate findings for the elimination of hazardous situations in the workplace. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive basic education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess.

Basic Requirements: The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).
