Duties

As a Health Scientist, you will: Serve as administrator for animal research protocol development, providing advice on various aspects of animal subject protection and research ethics. Research, interpret and advise on program issues, policies and procedures. Provide technical assistance and support to principal investigators on the development, submission and review of animal research protocols. Develop reports that integrate protocols from various science programs by focusing on the merging, management and analysis of information data. Collect and analyze records and reports of all Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) related activities including but not limited to monthly meeting minutes and deliberations, facility inspection reports and USDA reports and formulate strategies and changes to meet increased or decreased demand for products and/services. Participate in collaborative work efforts with the CDC Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and represent the organization on study issues with staff members and customers within and outside the organization. Serve a liaison with various governmental agencies and comply and distribute current informational and regulatory publications pertinent to animal care use.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level, which must include the following experience: providing technical advice and reports on the humane care and use of animals in biomedical research; interpreting animal welfare policies and regulations for the care and use of animals; and assessing public health activities at local, state and/or national levels. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
