Duties
Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
Set up and monitor a variety of complex respiratory equipment such as ventilatory life support systems for the most seriously ill patients in critical care areas.
Perform assessments of patients through examination, analyses of laboratory results and interpretation of x-rays for the independent adjustment of ventilator settings in emergency situations
Perform assessment of the cardiopulmonary condition of assigned patients using data acquired through physical examination and respiratory monitoring and diagnostic equipment.
Perform airway management on intensive care unit and ward patients including securing the tracheotomy and endotracheal tube sites, tracheostomy care, and adjusting the endotracheal tube as required based on x-ray results.
Provide informational and instructional training to respiratory therapy students, respiratory therapists, nursing personnel and physicians.
Implements patient care plans and protocols for weaning patients from ventilatory life support systems.
Performs CPAP and spontaneous breathing trials/interacts with physicians to develop weaning plan for patients on ventilatory life support equipment.
Draws arterial blood samples for patients through arterial blood punctures and arterial catheters.
Interprets the data and recognizes critical values that fall outside the ranges for normal blood and provides immediate action to inform the physician.
Performs bedside pulmonary function tests such as Flow Volume Loops, Negative Inspiratory Pressure, Total Minute Ventilation, Forced and Slow Vital Capacities.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- This position may include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).
- This position may require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 45 pounds is required.
- Will be required to obtain and maintain the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
- Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) from National Board for Respiratory Care is required.
- Tuberculosis screening is required.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes evaluating respiratory therapy patients; setting up, operating and/or maintaining respiratory therapy equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Respiratory Therapy and/or Respiratory Care.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
A Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) from National Board for Respiratory Care is required.
Education
