About the Position: Responsible for the safe, orderly and expeditious flow of aircraft within an approximate 50-mile radius of Fort Polk.
This is an open and continuous announcement/standing register. It will be used to fill immediate and future vacancies. Resumes will be reviewed every thirty days until selection/closing date.
Duties
Perform air traffic control duties independently.
Incumbent is fully responsible for executing and formulating control decisions complying with published rules, policies, procedures and federal laws or regulations.
The work is reviewed based on assessment of the adequacy with which the incumbent performs the work and through periodic over-the-shoulder evaluations for overall performance.
When working on a shift without supervisory assistance, has full responsibility for terminal air traffic control activities as Controller in Charge, or other ATC position duties.
Requirements
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a non-critical sensitive (Secret) security clearance.
- Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, "Condition of employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse testing Program," or a "Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)."
- This position is subject to rotational shifts, changes in duty hours and is subject to being on call based on situational requirements.
- This position required Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) up to 5%.
- Incumbent is required to have a pre-appointment, annual and an unusual Class IV aviation flight physical.
- The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State Driver’s License.
- This position requires you to support the Facility Training Program and to be involved with one-on-one on the job training (OJT).
- This position requires FAA certification, Form 7220-1.
- Must complete the Fort Polk Army Radar Approach Control and Tower training programs and attain qualification and certification in each facility to remain employed.
- Successful completion of a recognized air traffic control school, have or attain a Control Tower Operator certificate and ATCS Certificate equivalent, and meet physical standards by maintaining a current Class II ATC Flight physical.
- This is a Term position scheduled to last 13 months. A term position may be extended to a maximum of six years depending upon the needs of management.
- Term employment is subject to a one-year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. GS-11 level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes establishing and maintaining radio or visual contact with aircrafts; analyzing field and weather observations used to control air traffic; and determining the order of aircraft arrivals and departures in a terminal. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service
(GS-09).
GS-12 level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes formulating and issuing rapid and precise air traffic control instructions; directing aircraft movement in flight and on runways or taxiways; and controlling takeoff and landing of military or civilian aircraft utilizing a radar approach control facility.
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must be a graduate of a Department of Defense component or Federal Aviation Administration approved formal Air Traffic Controller school and possess Air Traffic Control Specialist or Control Tower Operator certifications. Maximum Entry Age (MEA)
The MEA for Air Traffic Controller is 36. Applicants not appointed by the last day of the month in which that individual reaches their 36th birthday shall not be appointed or assigned to these positions.
Maximum Re-entry Age
An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she meets the applicable qualification requirements AND will be able to complete a total of 20 years of covered service as an Air Traffic Controller by the last day of the month in which they become 56. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position.
Waivers to Maximum Entry Age
MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: Waivers to MEA for Air Traffic Controllers must be approved by local Command. However, any individual who has reached the mandatory separation age (56) is not eligible for employment or reemployment as an Air Traffic Controller.
