About the Position: Serve as an Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS) at a Level III, Terminal facility, responsible for the safe, orderly and expeditious flow of aircraft within an approximate 50-mile radius of Fort Polk.

Duties

Perform air traffic control duties independently. Incumbent is fully responsible for executing and formulating control decisions complying with published rules, policies, procedures and federal laws or regulations. The work is reviewed based on assessment of the adequacy with which the incumbent performs the work and through periodic over-the-shoulder evaluations for overall performance. When working on a shift without supervisory assistance, has full responsibility for terminal air traffic control activities as Controller in Charge, or other ATC position duties.

Requirements

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment FAA Flight physical or equivalent examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • This position requires you to support the Facility Training Program and to be involved with one-on-one on the job training (OJT).
  • This position requires the FAA Certification; Form 7220-1 or Tower CTO Certification.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

GS-11 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes establishing and maintaining radio or visual contact with aircrafts; analyzing field and weather observations used to control air traffic; and determining the order of aircraft arrivals and departures in a terminal. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). GS-12 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes formulating and issuing rapid and precise air traffic control instructions; directing aircraft movement in flight and on runways or taxiways; and controlling takeoff and landing of military or civilian aircraft utilizing a radar approach control facility. In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must be a graduate of a Department of Defense component or Federal Aviation Administration approved formal Air Traffic Controller school and possess Air Traffic Control Specialist or Control Tower Operator certifications. (Note: You must attach a copy of your certifications for verification). Maximum Entry Age (MEA) The MEA for Air Traffic Controller is 36. Applicants not appointed by the last day of the month in which that individual reaches their 36th birthday shall not be appointed or assigned to these positions. Maximum Re-entry Age An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she meets the applicable qualification requirements AND will be able to complete a total of 20 years of covered service as an Air Traffic Controller by the last day of the month in which they become 56. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position. Waivers to Maximum Entry Age MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: Waivers to MEA for Air Traffic Controllers must be approved by local Command. However, any individual who has reached the mandatory separation age (56) is not eligible for employment or reemployment as an Air Traffic Controller.
