This is an entry-level position located within Facilities Management, Engineering Section in the boiler plant operations. The trainee participates in the VISN 2 Boiler Plant Operator 2-year apprentice training program.
Duties
Duties are under the direct supervision of the Boiler Plant Manager/supervisor and include but are not limited to:
Gaining knowledge of the basic theory of boiler operation, trade practices, and skills in the operation and maintenance of boiler operations.
Learning the basics of boiler plant operations and steam systems.
Becoming familiar with and comprehending proper policies and procedures, including the lockout/tag out (LOTO) system and confined space entry.
Performing all duties with training, and under direct supervision.
Learning the process of Lighting off (starts up), warmup and shutdown boilers, operating, securing, and maintaining boilers and auxiliary support equipment.
Inspecting boilers and auxiliary equipment.
Performing proper safety procedures prior to working on boiler plant equipment.
Learning the process of gradually warming up boilers and steam piping systems.
Assisting with preventive maintenance inspections (PMI) on boilers and associated boiler/steam production equipment.
Cleans equipment and performs general housekeeping duties as assigned.
Assists with boiler and associated steam production equipment repairs discovered during performance inspections, normal operation or because of equipment failure.
Performs water treatment and chemical testing boiler feed condensate.
Observes meters and gauges to ensure proper combustion and prescribed temperatures and pressures.
Maintains equipment in a manner that is safe and meets operating requirements for efficient operations.
Completes required records, logs and documentation on operations and maintenance.
Maintains a work site that is clean, neat, and painted to meet suitable housekeeping practices.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Sun-Sat, rotating shifts 24/7

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and elevated catwalks, and frequently works in confined areas in and around boilers and support equipment. Work may be at or above ground level and requires moderate to strenuous effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, reaching, stooping, and crouching, as the work site dictates. Incumbent frequently lifts and carries boiler parts and chemical supplies weighing up to 50 lbs. unassisted and occasionally carries items weighing over 50 lbs. with assistance. Must submit to an annual physical examination ('VA Handbook 5019, Part II, Appendix A, paragraph 4).
