Serves as a Motor Vehicle Operator in the Ground & Transportation Section, Environmental Services Department, VAWNYHS/Buffalo Division. Primary purpose of the position is to transport patients for medical appointments using van, wheelchair van, sedans and other appropriate vehicles.
Duties
Operates a variety of gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles with approximate gross vehicle weight of up to 26,000 pounds (to include cargo vans, trucks, wheelchair van, and buses, etc.)
Determines route to be followed, taking into consideration such factors as ongoing hospital activities, weight limitations, and safety conditions
Transports patients and family members, supplies, materials, or equipment throughout the medical center complex and the local public area
Assures vehicle is not overloaded
Performs required operator maintenance
Maintains service records, completes delivery records, trip tickets, and compiles accident reports
Loads and unloads crated equipment, supplies, and parts from vehicles
Uncrates material as necessary and checks, counts, sorts materials, stocks and palletizes material, etc.
Operates a forklift truck (of up to 10,000 or more pound capacity)
Performs other duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 10:00am - 6:30pm; May work weekends and Holidays based on agency needs.

Qualifications

Requires a current and valid state Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and air brakes.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Light physical effort is required in reaching, bending, turning, or moving arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls of motor vehicles. Physical effort is exerted in operating, turning, backing, and controlling heavier vehicles.
The work of this position requires standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time; bending, stooping, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May lift and carry items that weigh up to 50 pounds or more. Heavier items are moved with weight handling equipment or with assistance from others. Forklift operation requires moderate physical effort in operating hand and foot.
