Located within the Environmental Management Service at the Western NY VA Medical Center in Buffalo, NY. The Motor Vehicle Operator provides transportation assistance to the medical center. This position requires a valid, current Driver's License.

Duties

Operates a variety of gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles with approximate gross vehicle weight of up to 26,000 pounds (to include cargo vans, trucks, wheelchair van, and buses, etc.) Determines route to be followed, taking into consideration such factors as ongoing hospital activities, weight limitations, and safety conditions Transports patients and family members, supplies, materials, or equipment throughout the medical center complex and the local public area Assures vehicle is not overloaded Performs required operator maintenance Maintains service records, completes delivery records, trip tickets, and compiles accident reports Loads and unloads crated equipment, supplies, and parts from vehicles Uncrates material as necessary and checks, counts, sorts materials, stocks and palletizes material, etc. Operates a forklift truck (of up to 10,000 or more pound capacity) Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 10:00am - 6:30pm; May work weekends and Holidays based on agency needs. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/21/2023. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Light physical effort is required in reaching, bending, turning, or moving arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls of motor vehicles. Physical effort is exerted in operating, turning, backing, and controlling heavier vehicles. The work of this position requires standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time; bending, stooping, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May lift and carry items that weigh up to 50 pounds or more. Heavier items are moved with weight handling equipment or with assistance from others. Forklift operation requires moderate physical effort in operating hand and foot.
