This position is located in the Planned Projects Section of Maintenance and Operations, Facility Management Service, at the VA Medical Center, Salem, Virginia. Responsible for installing, troubleshooting, and repairing all electrical equipment, such as: electrical distribution system, including primary system cable, switches, transformers, electrical systems up to 4,100 volts, main distribution panels, feeders, power conditioners, branch panels, circuits, and devices up to 600 volts.
Duties
This position performs installation, maintenance, and/or repair of utility systems within the facility. Duties include work involved in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical wiring systems and associated fixtures, controls, end equipment in industrial, institutional, office, and residential buildings. These jobs require knowledge and application of electrical principles, materials, and safety standards. Overtime and/or changes in the employee's standard tour of duty may be required upon occasion to complete assigned task. Performs work with little or no supervision in installing, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing electrical wiring systems and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment in industrial, institutional, office, and residential buildings.
Incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Planned Projects Shop Supervisor. Work is assigned on a long-term, as well as on a day-to-day basis. Receives assignments, orally or in writing. Specific problems are discussed with the Supervisor for extensive and difficult assignments, however, normal, routine assignments are given with reference only to the desired results and time for accomplishment.
Duties include, but are not limited to:- Working from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals.- Performs preventative maintenance and repairs to existing electrical systems, fixtures, controls and equipment for furnishing light and power.- Disassembles equipment, repairs and/or replaces parts and components, cleans and assembles.- Makes operational tests and adjustments as necessary.- Installs equipment.- Cuts, bends and installs metal conduit, and installs properly-sized wires.- Troubleshoots by checking or tracing circuits, locates and diagnoses trouble, repairs or replaces parts and reinstalls.- Repairs and installs line starters, controllers, limit switches, pressure switches (high and low) and all types of controlling relays.- Makes adjustments and solves problems by use of electrical formulae for computing voltages, resistance, amperages, capacitances and frequencies. Will include helping other trades during projects as a Helper only when electrical is done.
Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 3:00-11:30pm. Must have the flexibility to work outside the normal tour of duty which may include weekend and holidays.
