This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties
Prepare and coordinates Request for Surgery with the Operating Room personnel for the appropriate setup of lighting, type of surgical procedures, instruments and equipment required and the positioning and draping of the patient.
Serve as a first surgical assistant to the responsible Orthopaedic surgeon during major surgery and treatment of inpatients
Perform tasks such as changing and applying dressings, holding incisions open, positioning limbs, closing incisions, removing sutures, and administering medication specifically under direct instruction of the physician.
Serve as a surgical assistant and a scrub assistant to the orthopaedic surgeons in minor surgery and treatment of inpatients and outpatients.
As a surgical assistant, hands instruments and supplies to the surgeon during the operative procedure, both intuitively by previous experience and by direction of the surgeon
Perform a wide variety of casting procedures using plaster and synthetic materials.
Maintain supplies, equipment, and instruments and conducts inventory and restocks sterile surgical supplies for the treatment room.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- Inclement Weather Essential: Position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
- This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
- This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random drug testing, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- All applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Lifting up to 40 pounds may be required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Orthopedic treatment of injuries and disease of the bone, muscle, joints and tissue sufficient to assist an Orthopedic Surgeon with major and minor surgeries; and assisting the Orthopedic physician with surgical equipment, instruments and supplies; and fabricating and applying plaster splints, plaster casts including upper and lower extremity, neck and back casts.

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, such as Anatomy, Biology, or Orthopedic Surgery.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: The specialized experience as described, but less than one year; and some education leading to a bachelor's degree but less than required. Computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.).
