The duty station for the park is in Kalaupapa, Hawaii. Kalaupapa National Historical Park (NHP) was established in 1980 and is located midway along the north coast of the island of Molokai in the State of Hawaii. The park is situated entirely within Kalawao County, an isolated peninsula which is governed by the Director of the State Department of Health. The County includes the historic Hansen's disease settlements of Kalawao and Kalaupapa. The park was established to commemorate and preserve the story of those afflicted with this dreaded disease and their forced exile from family and friends. For more information, please visit the park's Facebook page.
The National Park Service is committed to protecting the privacy and lifestyle of the remaining Hansen's disease patient population, including traditional rules and customs. Due to long-standing Settlement rules with few exceptions, spouses and family members of employees are not permitted to live on the peninsula unless they work in Kalaupapa. Children under 16 are not allowed to visit the peninsula by State statute. Therefore, park housing, if available, would be available for the incumbent but not for their family or spouse.
