Qualifications

NOTE:  You must meet qualification requirements, including any requirements described in the Education section, by the closing date of this announcement. In addition to the basic entry education requirements, you must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as described below: To qualify for the GS-12 level, you must have 1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level defined as assisting in atmospheric science, air modeling, or meteorological subject areas and have experience in leading air quality model work, providing technical oversight, and assisting with regulatory assessment and review to meet the Clean Air Act program objectives.  To qualify for the GS-13 level, you must have 1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level defined as serving as a subject matter expert in atmospheric science, air modeling, or meteorological subject areas and have expertise in leading air quality model work, providing technical oversight, and assisting and providing regulatory assessment and review to meet the Clean Air Act program objectives.  Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and theories of the science of meteorology and air quality. Knowledge of advanced computational methods and operating systems and statistical analysis methods. Knowledge of regulatory programs under the Clean Air Act. Knowledge of meteorological models and air quality models routinely employed in regulatory modeling analyses. Skill in communicating complicated, technical information to a sophisticated audience as well as laymen and the general public. Ability to work independently as well as coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to prioritize and perform complex tasks in a timely manner. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education

Physical Scientist: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics; OR a combination of education and experience with education equivalent to one of the majors listed that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education

Meteorologist:

You must have a bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included:

  1. At least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of:

    a) Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics*;

    b) Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale);

    c) Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and

    d) Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.
  2. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions*.

  3. Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations*.

  4. At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following:  physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, computer science.

OR a combination of education and experience with education equivalent to one of the majors listed that included the described coursework.


*There is a prerequisite or corequisite of calculus for coursework in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations.  Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major.
