Duties

As a Epidemiologist you will: Serves as the recognized expert in epidemiology for the agency with responsibility for developing policy and objectives, appraising programs, and initiating requirements for epidemiological studies. Assignments are of such breadth as to cover complex problems in public health issues, and/or research, development and evaluations. Oversees contracts, grants, awards or cooperative agreements with full responsibility for carrying out all required monitoring and management duties. Serves as technical consultant on contracts for scientific services. Performs duties such as: writes statements of work, serves on technical review panels for contract proposals, and monitors contracts for quality assurance and quality control. Designs, plans and initiates epidemiologic studies, surveys, and investigations. Participates in various aspects of the study or survey design process, including conducting a search or review of the existing literature and data in a specialty area, and preparing and/or presenting summaries for a variety of purposes. Monitors internal review board clearances and designs questionnaires and other data collection instruments. Identifies and analyzes public health issues and their impact on public policies or epidemiological studies or surveys. Serves as a national or internationally recognized consultant and expert on epidemiological issues on critical problems in the field of epidemiology. Evaluates data collection, quality control, and data utilization methods used to study epidemiological problems and issues. Identifies or develops appropriate intervention methods to identify, treat or resolve various medical issues or problems. Supervises a small contingent of positions. Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work, when necessary. Assigns work to subordinates based on priorities, considering difficulty and requirements of assignments as well as the capabilities of employees. Gives advice, counsel, or instruction to employees on both work and administrative matters. May interview candidates for positions in the work unit.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: designing or conducting epidemiological studies related to public health. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
