The Inpatient Operations and Surgical Program Lead functions at the highest level of clinical practice, working collaboratively with multiple disciplines to directly care for patients. The Inpatient Operations and Surgical Program Lead functions as a core member of their assigned team(s) assuring a high-quality medication use program which promotes use of the most effective, least toxic, and most economical medication treatments.

Surgical Area Lead
Assists in assuring a high-quality medication use and transitions of care program by serving as the pharmacist representative for the OR clinical areas.
Develops, conducts, and reports quality improvement monitors for clinical pharmacy practice in OR/anesthesia (MUE/Research etc.).
Inpatient Operations Lead-Assists the Inpatient Pharmacy supervisor to:
Ensure compliance with all VHA Directives and all accrediting bodies (such as Joint Commission/OIG/FDA/DEA) and perform survey readiness. Reviews historical data of findings and presents survey readiness and serves as the pharmacist representative for survey readiness committees.
Perform quality assurance on areas, reviews, tracks, and trends usage, develops policies, /SOP related to inpatient pharmacy services.
Clinical - Direct Patient Care Activities
Acts as a liaison between inpatient and outpatient pharmacies in both the inpatient and outpatient patient care settings.
Clinical - Indirect Patient Care Activities
Enters and documents medication errors or findings in the medication reporting system.
Documents clinical interventions in CPRS in a timely and professional manner as appropriate.
Medication dispensing and distribution
Responsible for processing all electronic orders (inpatient/outpatient) for assigned area as requested or needed including verifying patient information, correct medication dose, route, and frequency of administration. All orders are checked for patient allergies, drug interactions, incompatibilities, duplication, and priority.
Identifies, interprets, and resolves prescribing and dispensing issues, including pharmacotherapeutics and the formulary. Documents interventions within the specified timeframe if applicable.
Education
Available to serve as a preceptor for students, PGY-1 and PGY-2 residents at Edward Hines Jr VA Hospital and maintains preceptor qualifications that aligns with American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) and set forth by the residency program director.
Maintains pharmacy competency through continuous self-development activities.
Administration/Technical Support
Work with other health care providers to develop programs for improvement of drug use.
Develops and conducts medication usage evaluation in areas of need from a cost and patient outcome perspective.
Customer Service
Listens to all customer/patient feedback, positive and negative, acts to resolve complaints within his or her control, and reports feedback to management (or supervisor) in a timely manner.
Meets customer/patient expectations, with performance to be validated through established customer surveys, colleague nomination for service awards or other appropriate feedback systems determined by the direct Supervisor, which has baseline measurements of customer/patient satisfaction.
Information Security and Confidentiality
Computer System Security: Effectively safeguards all assigned computer system passwords and codes (access/verify codes, electronic signature codes, etc.).
Confidentiality of Information: Consistently limits personal access to all sensitive information and records, including patient medical records, other patient-specific information, personnel records, and employee health medical records, to those instances in which there is a specific job-related purpose.
Occupational Safety and Health
Follow safe work practices and procedures, including use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 6:00AM-2:30PM; Rotating weekends and holidays and off tour as needed for patient needs.

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education: (1) Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. Verification of approved degree programs may be obtained from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, 20 North Clark Street, Suite 2500, Chicago, Illinois 60602-5109; phone: (312) 664-3575, or through their Web site at: http://www.acpe-accredit.org/. (NOTE: Prior to 2005 ACPE accredited both baccalaureate and Doctor of Pharmacy terminal degree program. Today the sole degree is Doctor of Pharmacy.) (2) Graduates of foreign pharmacy degree programs meet the educational requirement if the graduate is able to provide proof of achieving the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Commission (FPGEC) Certification, which includes passing the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT).
Licensure: Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. The pharmacist must maintain current registration if this is a requirement for maintaining full, current, and unrestricted licensure. A pharmacist who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, section B, paragraph 16.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
GS-13
Experience. In addition to the GS-12 requirements, must have 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. (b) Assignments. Candidates at this grade level are to be in one of the assignments listed below. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher level duties must consist of significant scope, administrative independence, complexity (difficulty) and range of variety as described in this standard at the specified grade level and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-13.
Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the duties of this position. The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing/sitting for prolonged periods of time, frequent twisting/turning, and bending/stooping. The incumbent must be able to perform lifting/carrying, pushing, or pulling different types of equipment such as cabinets, carts or supplies weighing at minimum 50 pounds through various terrains.
