You will serve as a Nondestructive Test Inspector in the NDT Inspection Branch, Non-Nuclear Inspection and NDT Division, Quality Assurance Office, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine.
Duties
You will independently perform complex nondestructive testing and analysis on naval surface ships and submarines and nuclear propulsion plants to determine structural integrity of the items.
You will interpret test results and determine final acceptance/rejection of items in accordance with specific codes and specifications without supervisory controls.
You will control production work and have the authority to direct work stoppage when further work would cover a defect or endanger personnel or equipment.
You will complete and maintain detailed test records that are subject to audit.
Requirements

- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- You may be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
- Occasional overtime and rotating shifts may be required.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- This is a bargaining unit position.
- Job commitments may require travel to other activities, i.e. anywhere in the USA and overseas on very short notice, rotation of shifts, and extended working hours.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to Inspect as a Nondestructive Test Inspector and perform the following work:
Inspecting Nuclear Reactor Plant components while using ultrasonic testing (UT), X-Ray and Isotope (Gamma) Radiographic Testing (RT), and Eddy Current Heat Exchanger Tubing Testing (ET) inspection methods.
Performing nondestructive testing and analysis on mechanical components, piping systems, and structural assemblies.
Performing surface inspections using liquid penetrant testing (PT), and magnetic particle testing (MT) inspection methods.
Interpreting and evaluating test results by discriminating electromagnetic signatures, waveforms, digital images, and the density of processed film.
Performing calibration and safety checks of test equipment prior to and after performance of NDT inspections.
Possessing complete and thorough knowledge of mathematics (algebra, geometry, and trigonometry), physics, and a thorough understanding of the physical and chemical properties of the materials being inspected.
