The Injury Prevention Coordinator works within the Division of Environmental Health Services located in Reno, NV. The primary purpose of the position is to coordinate the development of a community based approach to prevent injury patterns in Tribal communities within the District and to assist the District Environmental Health Officer (Sanitarian) in the administration and provision for services for the comprehensive Environmental Health Services Health program in the District.
Duties
Serves as primary liaison between the Area Injury Prevention Specialist and tribal representatives, IHS Staff and other government agencies in the District.
Coordinates and provides training for tribal public health practitioners relating to all matters of injury prevention.
Assist tribes in developing injury prevention programs and interventions by preparing plans, project proposals and grant applications.
Collaborates with the District Environmental Health Officer in the planning, development, implementation, evaluation and promoting a comprehensive Environmental Health Services program in the District.
Conducts and provides technical assistance in environmental health assessments of public buildings, including but not limited to health care facilities, schools, daycares and community buildings.
Conducts and provides technical assistance to reduce the risk and incidence of vector-borne diseases. Vector control activities include community rabies vaccination clinics, vector surveillance, community education, and case investigations.
Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS, GS-0688:A full 4-year course study that meets all the requirements for a bachelor's degree, and that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in a science or any combination of sciences directly related to environmental health (such as sanitary science, public health, chemistry, microbiology, or any appropriate agricultural, biological, or physical science).
OR
Four years experience in inspectional, investigational, technical support, or other responsible work that provided a knowledge and a fundamental understanding of, and the ability to use, environmental health principles, methods, and techniques equivalent to that which would have been gained through a 4-year college curriculum.
OR
A combination of education and experience as described above.
In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications and Selective Placement Factors stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GS-12 GRADE LEVEL:
One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples include: Analyzing substances to determine contamination or the presence of disease, or resolving environmental health problems through collection, tabulation, and evaluation of environmental sanitation data and development and implementation of plans to eliminate or control environmental health hazards.
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS: The following Selective Placement Factors have been determined to be essential for the position. Candidates must show possession of these two (2) factors in order to be minimally qualified. Failure to do so will result in a "Not Qualified" rating.
Knowledge and expertise of community-based environmental health as evidenced by possession of a valid state or national registration as a Registered Sanitarian or Registered Environmental Health Specialist. Copy of registration must be submitted; AND
Knowledge and expertise essential in planning and implementing comprehensive community-based prevention programs that reflect the needs and cultural acceptance of Tribal communities as evidenced by completion of an advanced training program in Injury Prevention. Qualifying programs include, but not limited to, the IHS Injury Prevention Fellowship, Associate of Applied Sciences Degree in Injury Prevention from the United Tribes Technical College, University of North Carolina Prevent Institute Intensive Program or the University of Southern Florida Graduate Certificate in Violence and Injury Prevention. Copy of your certificate of completion must be submitted.
