This position is part of the Plant Operations, Government Publishing Office in Washington, District of Columbia
Duties
Ensuring accurate and comprehensive records are kept for each project.
Collaborating with stakeholders to develop preservation plans for the conservation of specific collections.
Providing recommendations for handling, storage, and display to prolong the life of books.
Staying abreast of industry advancements, conservation trends, and emerging technologies.
Contributing to the continuous improvement of conservation techniques through research and development initiatives.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship is Required.
- Selectee must pass all preemployment requirements prior to appointment.
- Selectee must undergo a background investigation for a Non-Sensitive-Low Risk
- Males born after 12/03/59 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Selectee may be required to serve a one year probationary period.
- Physical Effort: The work requires the incumbent to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds (i.e. stacks of flat sheets of paper, books, etc.).
- Working Conditions: Work in well lighted, heated, and ventilated areas.
- Drug testing is required.
Qualifications
To qualify for the Bookbinder, you must meet the following requirements:
Applicants must meet the following Screen-Out element, Job Element #1 to be considered for this position. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the online questionnaire. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT below is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. The screen-out element for this position is:
Ability to do the work of a Bookbinder without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT), to be considered for this position. Applicants must have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to independently perform the duties typically required of a Bookbinder. Duties include (1) Employing traditional bookbinding techniques and modern conservation methods to repair, restore, and conserve rare and delicate books; AND (2) Conducting thorough assessments of materials used in books, identifying factors contributing to deterioration; AND
(3) Maintaining detailed documentation of conservation processes, including before-and-after photographs, written reports, and treatment records.
In addition to meeting the SCREENOUT, the selectee must possess the following JOB ELEMENTS:
Operation of knives and cutting tools
Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic)
Use of Measuring Instruments
Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Other Than Blueprint Reading)
Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
Knowledge of Materials
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
