This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel in the Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: This position is located at the Directorate of Public Works (DPW) in Fort Riley, Kansas.
Duties
Start up, shut down, winterize, and de-winterize water heaters and HVAC equipment.
Determine the cause of defects and malfunctions on boilers, refrigeration, air conditioning systems and other equipment.
Perform scheduled maintenance on boilers, refrigeration and air conditioning systems and equipment.
Responsible for the proper handling of specific hazardous wastes generated by the facility.
Supervise and/or assist in emergency action involving hazardous wastes.
Replace defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fused and electrical wiring to repair installed units.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent is required to have a universal certification for handling chlorofluorocarbon CFC's (refrigeration). May be obtained within 6 months of employment.
- Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a valid government vehicle driver's license.
- This position require the incumbent obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination to ensure the required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Industrial Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. The ability to perform common Industrial Equipment Mechanic duties such as replacing defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fused and electrical wiring; utilizing electrician's hand tools and test equipment. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The employee lifts, carries, and handles equipment up to 50 pounds unassisted and over 50 pounds with assistance. Works from ladders, scaffolding platforms, vertical personnel lifts, or cramped areas where equipment, parts, or tools are hard to reach. Work requires frequent stooping, stretching bending, kneeling, and working in tiring, uncomfortable positions for long periods. Occasionally handles items weighing up to 100 pounds.
Working Conditions:
A majority of the work is performed indoors and in cramped positions. However, some of the work may be performed outside. The incumbent is exposed to chemicals when testing, treating, washing boilers or cleaning filters.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
