About the Position: Fort Johnson, formerly Fort Polk, is comprised of the towns of Leesville, DeRidder, New Llano and Anacoco in Louisiana.
Duties
Ensure all medical care recovery claims are fully developed, adjudicated, asserted with follow up and ultimately collected upon or closed with monies deposited in the appropriate account.
Contact injured parties, and appropriate agencies to verify information to ensure accuracy of data and to determine applicable statutory authorities and potential third-party tortfeasors to pursue recovery of government monies.
Assist Claims Attorney in final formatting of all litigation reports to ensure submission to higher headquarters, including required memorandums for cases necessary for obtaining approval from higher headquarters, and or the US Attorney's Office.
Performs basic legal and administrative research by researching various documents for supervisor or staff attorneys on a wide range of Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA) under consideration to prepare written summaries or memoranda.
Identifies issues to be further researched after reviewing cases/investigations.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires that the employee is able to obtain and maintain Non-Critical Sensitive (Secret) security clearance.
- This position requires the employee to travel away from the normal duty station on an infrequent basis up to 5% of the time.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a two year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- This is a Term position scheduled not to exceed 13 months. A term position may be extended to a maximum of eight years depending upon the needs of management.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes work that involves reviewing formal complaints, identifying issues involved, and obtaining the information and documentation needed to prepare the case for analysis and development by other paralegal specialists or professional staff; and/or analyzing documents for supportive evidence, organizing findings, and writing synopses for use by an attorney. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

GS-09 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1). Providing legal assistance to attorneys, reviewing case materials to familiarize with questions under consideration; search for and summarize relevant articles in various literature, law reviews, studies, reports; 2). Preparing digests of selected decisions or opinions which incorporate legal reference or analysis of precedents; preparing summary reports for attorney review, verifying citations and legal references on prepared legal documents; preparing summaries of testimony and depositions; 3). and drafting and editing nonlegal memorandum, research reports and correspondence relating to cases. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
