About the Position: Fort Johnson, formerly Fort Polk, is comprised of the towns of Leesville, DeRidder, New Llano and Anacoco. The nearest cities are Alexandria and Lake Charles. The area is considered rural and includes Kisatchie National Forest, which offers hunting and recreational activities located nearby.

Duties

Receives, logs and reviews disciplinary/administrative case files, external inquiries and staff actions for compliance with applicable regulatory guidance in content, procedures, and documentation. Prepares memoranda for correspondence for the reviewing attorney, drafts legal opinions, identifies deficiencies and recommends appropriate course of action. Performs substantive legal research of court decisions, case decisions, applicable state, and local statues, regulations, and opinions relevant to case work. Researches and analyzes facts surrounding administrative actions to ensure discharge or adverse personnel actions meet regulatory requirements and the rights of affected personnel are upheld. Researches legal issues relevant to cases/investigations under consideration and prepares written summaries or memoranda. Prepares draft responses/opinions/action documents for the signature of the reviewing attorney, decision/action authority in specific cases IAW established formats and regulations. Prepares and assembles summarized testimony and reports, prepares and marks exhibits and records/reports, and compilation and organization of case materials.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1). Providing legal assistance to attorneys, reviewing case materials to familiarize with questions under consideration; search for and summarize relevant articles in various literature, law reviews, studies, reports; 2). Preparing digests of selected decisions or opinions which incorporate legal reference or analysis of precedents; preparing summary reports for attorney review, verifying citations and legal references on prepared legal documents; preparing summaries of testimony and depositions; 3). and drafting and editing nonlegal memorandum, research reports and correspondence relating to cases. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
