The primary purpose of this position is to serve as Lead Fitness Attendant in one of the installation fitness centers.
Duties
Serves as fitness attendant and maintains order and enforces policies, procedures, and safety rules for fitness center which serve a diverse customer market.
Receives, stores, and issues a variety of recreational supplies and equipment. Ensures that issue slips are properly completed on all equipment issues.
Collects fees for services and resale merchandise.
Assists in the physical conditioning programs by demonstrating equipment, methods and procedures to be used, as well as proper safety techniques.
Sets up and takes down equipment for sport programs and/or special events.

- Subject to physical examination (every three years) and immunizations IAW AFI 48-110 and local requirements.
- Employee must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs; the employee must pass classification summary, physical examination requirements.
- Requires annual Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Basic Life Support/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/BLS/AED) Certification.
- Must complete all mandatory training IAW appropriate regulations, and maintain certification in standard first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Drug Test requirement was modified on 17 Dec 2010 to comply with AFI 44-107 Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program, 7 April 2010. (Category III/Type 1: Disrectionaly TDP/Protection of life and property.)
- A pre-employment physical is a condition of employment.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions Technical and Medical Support Positions. GS-0189 Recreation Assistant Series.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-04, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities. Teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities. Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service. Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities. Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children). Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop. Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility. Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities.
OR
EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Basic knowledge of a standardized body of rules, procedures and operations related to one or more indoor/outdoor recreation functions in order to perform the required activities in a fitness and sports environment.
2. Basic knowledge of general office administrative and clerical procedures, and automation functions to support office operations such as answer telephone, maintain files/office forms, order supplies, operate a cash register, enter and retrieve data from a computer. A qualified typist is not required.
3. Ability to follow written and or oral instructions.
4. Knowledge of a full range of work processing functions and the ability to work independently with little need for direct supervision in completing the assignments involving a sequence of tasks or processes.
5. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a diverse group of individuals, using a high degree of tact and diplomacy.
6. General knowledge of established safety standards and procedures.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
