Duties

Serves as fitness attendant and maintains order and enforces policies, procedures, and safety rules for fitness center which serve a diverse customer market. Receives, stores, and issues towels and a variety of recreational supplies and equipment. Ensures that issue slips are properly completed on all equipment issues. Assists in the physical conditioning programs by demonstrating equipment, methods and procedures to be used, as well as proper safety techniques. Collects fees for services and resale merchandise. Sets up and takes down equipment for sport programs and/or special events.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the general and specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, GS-0189 series. GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least 6 months of general experience. Examples of general experience includes any type of work that demonstrates the ability to answer phones, verify patron access, and basic computer usage. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least 6 months of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-03, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes: Open and ready facility for operation or close and secure facility at night. Provide information to participants regarding the rules, regulations, and requirements for program matters such as facility schedules, patron eligibility, discipline, fees, equipment, prices for classes, etc. Receive and take reservations by telephone and walk-in, for various areas located in the sports center such as racquetball, volleyball, and/or basketball. Inventories, maintains simple inventory records, initiates action to restock low supplies, restocks, displays checkout items, removes faulty items from inventory. Assist the development of individual and group exercise and weight training programs. Prepare daily cashier reports and consolidated activity reports. Ensures equipment is clean and safe. OR EDUCATION: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.). NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Basic knowledge of a standardized body of rules, procedures and operations related to one or more indoor/outdoor recreation functions in order to perform the required activities in a fitness and sports environment. 2. Basic knowledge of general office administrative and clerical procedures, and automation functions to support office operations such as answer telephone, maintain files/office forms, order supplies, operate a cash register, enter and retrieve data from a computer. A qualified typist is not required. 3. Ability to follow written and or oral instructions. 4. Knowledge of a full range of work processing functions and the ability to work independently with little need for direct supervision in completing the assignments involving a sequence of tasks or processes. 5. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a diverse group of individuals, using a high degree of tact and diplomacy. 6. General knowledge of established safety standards and procedures. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
