Duties
DUTIES:
Performs simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades. Applicant must be able to complete the identified basic tasks to perform the function of the position. Equipment, vehicle and building maintenance and repair serve as the major duties for this position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:Exerts heavy physical effort in tasks such as frequent lifting and moving objects weighing 30 to 50 unassisted and 70 pounds with assistance. Extensive walking, bending, and lifting above the head are required. Required to work outside in all kinds of weather conditions and inside work involves exposure to dust, drafts, and fumes. Motor vehicles are driven in all types of traffic and weather on public roads.
Area Information:White Sands National Park, dedicated to preserving the world's largest gypsum dune field while providing recreational and scenic enjoyment for the public, is located 15 miles west of Alamogordo, New Mexico, and is sandwiched between Holloman Air Base and White Sands Missile Range. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees, while winter months tend to be mild with nighttime temperatures frequently dipping below freezing. Precipitation averages 8 inches per year. Alamogordo (population 35,000) is nestled at the foot of the Sacramento Mountains and is 15 miles from the cool pines of the Lincoln National Forest. Alamogordo is situated at the crossroads of U.S. Highway 54, 70 and 82, which lead east into the mountains and the quaint village of Cloudcroft, New Mexico, south to the international border city of El Paso, Texas, west to the university city of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and north into the heart of the Land of Enchantment. Local attractions range from recreational opportunities and cultural events to areas of historical significance and educational possibilities. The area is host to museums, observatories, state and nationally managed parks and recreation sites, theaters for the performing arts, institutions of higher learning, and an abundance of year-round community events and activities.
